09/10/06: Auckland - Bay of Islands

Era cert, a les 4 del matí ens hem desvetllat. Però ens hem posat a dormir altra vegada i fins a les 7 no ens hem llevat. Intentem fer una mica de pla pels propers dies, per calcular més o menys quin dia voldrem el ferry per creuar les dues illes, però no ens queda clar, així que ja ho anirem decidint sobre la marxa.

De bon matí ens plantem al museu "Auckland Memorial Museum" on anem amb la intenció de veure la gran col·lecció de peces maorís que tenen. És molt interessant per començar a conèixer una mica com vivien els primers habitants de Nova Zelanda.

Després anem a recollir la caravana. Em sembla molt gran! Començarà conduint el Julio, jo ja ho faré, però de bones a primeres em fa més aviat por. Parem a comprar algunes coses bàsiques per la caravana i ens dirigim cap a Bay of Islands.

Entre una cosa i l'altre s'ha fet tard i no arribarem a Pahia (base per visitar Bay of Islands), així que ens quedem a dormir a Whangarei. M'he començat a estressar una mica només de pensar el munt de coses que tinc a la llista per veure i de com passa el temps. Més val que em calmi que estic de vacances!!! A partir de demà ja canviarem l'horari per aprofitar les hores de sol: dormir a les 22h i llevar-nos a les 6h.

La primera nit a la caravana ha estat força divertida: per començar hem utilitzat paper de vàter com a tovallons, gairebé ens descuidem posar el fre de mà i per arrodonir-ho hem dormit amb un sol nòrdic individual perquè no me n'havia adonat que n'hi havia dos.

Julio was right, we woke up at 4 AM, but we went back to sleep. Finally we get up at 7 and try to do some planning for the following days: it would be great to know when to leave towards the south island. But it is not easy, so we defer the decision.

Early in the morning we go to the Auckland Memorial Museum to see their large collection of Maori and pacific treasures. An excellent first contact with Maori history and way of life.

After that we go pick up the caravan. It looks so big! Julio will drive until I get feel more confident with it. We stop to buy some basic stuff for the caravan and head towards Bay of Islands.

By no chance can we arrive into Pahia before it gets dark, so we decide to stay in Whangarei. I’ve started to feel stressed by just thinking about the many places we want to go and how fast the time goes by. But hey, I’m on vacation, so I’d rather calm down a bit. We decide to go to bed a 22 and get up at 6 to make the most of sunlight.

Our first night in the caravan is quite funny: we need to use toilet paper as napkins, we almost forget to handbrake the caravan and we sleep with a single duvet because I didn’t realise we had two!!!
